Radon Testing

Understanding what you are testing for is the first step to proper Radon testing in Edmonton. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless carcinogenic gas that can accumulate in homes to dangerous levels, increasing the risk of lung cancer. In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and contributes to more than 3,200 deaths in Canada each year. Edmonton, along with the rest of the Prairie provinces, is among the most Radon-exposed regions in the world—making testing essential for every household. When inhaled, Radon particles break down in the lungs and damage DNA; long-term exposure to elevated levels can lead to mutations that cause cancer.

Radon enters homes through cracks, gaps, and openings in foundation slabs, sump pits, and even voids beneath older furnace installations. Levels often rise during Edmonton’s long winters, when homes are sealed tightly to keep heat in but also trap Radon gas. While fresh air helps dilute Radon, limited ventilation in colder months makes winter the highest-risk season. Both old and new homes are susceptible—even modern builds with Radon-resistant features can test high due to today’s airtight construction methods. Recent studies show that more than 18% of Canadian homes exceed Health Canada’s maximum guideline of 200 Bq/m³.

The only way to know your home’s Radon levels is through testing. Because Radon cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, specialized devices are required. You can choose between a long-term test kit or a digital monitor. Long-term kits provide the most accurate results but require at least 90 days plus lab analysis. Digital monitors offer faster insights, showing trends within 24 hours and tracking daily fluctuations. However, Health Canada recommends a long-term average for the most reliable picture, since levels vary with weather, pressure, and seasonal changes.

If your test results show levels below 100 Bq/m³, your home is considered low-risk, though retesting every two years is advised—especially if ground disturbances occur nearby. Results between 100 and 200 Bq/m³ indicate a moderate risk, where mitigation may be beneficial, particularly for households with young children, a history of cancer, or other health concerns. Readings above 200 Bq/m³ are classified as high-risk, and professional mitigation is strongly recommended to lower lung cancer risk.
